I notice that there is a board for them, but I guess I'm they only one here who has any. Correct me if I'm wrong. I used to have 11, age has taken most of them to the rainbow bridge. I now am down to four. Cognac

Finally, a mice post!
All I know about them is they are smaller than gerbs, cute, and allegedly have pee that smells. (?). Maybe I'm wrong.
So tell us how they compare to hams and gerbs in regards to temperment, health, smells, habitat, etc.

I don't have gerbs, from what I have read on them they are similar to hamsters few differences. TEXT I would say that hammies/gerbs are healthier, as I said I had 11 I'm now down to 4, granted 7 of my 11 I got at nine monthes of age, that was under a year ago. I don't see any health problems then I see a dead one the next day, or one will be missing, it died and the others dispose of it. TEXTThey are usually very sweet creatures as far as all of mine are concerned, I've getten a small nip once or twice that didn't even leave a dent. Curious little critters, but cautious too. Don't ask me how I did it, I'll never know; I one time left thier cage door open over night, they were all there in the morning. They smell more, you can spot clean during the week all you want but you still have to clean the cage at the end of the week. I have them on the same bedding (aspen) as my hammies; I have them on the same food, I can't find lab blocks anywhere. Anymore questions just ask. Cognac

Alas, I have no pet mice. They come through occasionally as it is necessary for the python to... make their brief acquaintance.
They always get a pleasant-enough stay, with treats and cuddles and cozy bedding for their few minutes with us.
We think this was a wild-captured python, as it is totally inflexible as far as its diet.

I would love to have pet mice and I'm planning on doing so in the future, I'm just waiting until I feel I know enough about them. I mean I keep rats and from what I understand they are reasonably similar but there are differences. I've smelt them before and it doesn't bother me in the least

I have three white pinked eyed mice also known as PEWs, and one brown and white one, she has kinda a glossy look to her coat. The smell doesn't bother me, I find if you put a very thin layer of cat litter under thier bedding it's practically nonexistant. Cognac

What do you use as the main bedding, Cognac? I'm guessing they are as fragile, if not more with pine and cedar as rats are. I use a recycled paper cat litter [Bio Catolet] for my ratties, it works a treat and because it's not clay it doesn't pose the risk of getting dusty, or them eating it and their insides blocking. I spent ages trying to find a decent litter

I use Aspen as thier bedding and I give them Scott's toilet paper to do with as they wish, usually bed down. I give them the empty tp rolls too. Cognac

I believe it is illegal to feed live animals to snakes in the U.K. As it shoud be. I know at the Bronx Zoo they feed on humanely pre-killed carcasses. As for leaving the cage door open. . . once I came home after eleven hours out and started working on the girls' tank; I then noticed Tommy come walking up to me on the arm rest of the easy chair where the girls' tank is. Odd - as that meant Tommy had been loose all day having escaped secretly in the morning when I worked on the Gang of Fours' tank; he just haung around chillin' until I got back; I dropped in back into his tank. . . and he got a thorough butt sniffing from his two broithers and uncle! Two bad I don't I don't have two living rooms here for rodents. Maybe just as well as I'd never have time.

DF: As far as I'm aware it's illegal to sell animals live for feeding snakes, and I think you /can/ feed live animals to snakes but only if you prove that they won't eat frozen dead ones. I could be wrong though.

That's the law in the UK -- I think Monty would pass the test though -- he won't eat it unless it's walking around.
At least he is quick about it.
I personally think it's a tragedy but the snake must eat, just as the rodents must eat, just as I must eat.

I agree rasputin, i know i've talked to mike about this too. we all must eat, somethings eat other things, there isn't anything i can do about that.

Can you find snakes who will accept a vegan diet?? ;D

Snakes were not evolved for veggies -- though the snake that will eat broccoli would certainly make a more appealing housepet. It just wouldn't happen -- they need too much nutrition from every meal to make it on what essentially is water in cellulose.
