Some years ago I was actually at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA where Barbaro was, to pick up a bird that needed to go to the wild bird rehab. I lived about 5 miles from it for a few years. It was definitely *the* place for Barbaro to be. He surely got the best care possible.

I was going to say the same thing! I have St. Francis on my living room wall. . . . a friend went to Italy and brought me back a picture in relief of Francis feeding birds in a tree (birds being my thing). The picture itself is only 3" x 2.5"--so it's not like I have a shrine in my living room or anything!

I think you're referring to the ivory-billed woodpecker--and there's still disagreement as to whether it was sighted. The pileated woodpecker resembles it, and the video of the sighting isn't very clear.

Illinois. . . . so does this mean, DF, that your rat girls now live in the Midwest??? Or does Moses have multiple residences?
Lovely, friendly-looking animals!

I'm glad the man didn't get hurt or killed, but he got what was coming to him (and then some) for trying to hurt an animal!
Good post, Andrea!

Good letter, DF. And I'm with you on reptiles--at least the ones that require rodents as food.

I assume you know for a fact chinese hamsters are considred "exotic"? It seems that Chinese hamsters are considered "dwarf hamsters," by the pet store, and thus, I suppose, by the state. I looked at the actual Fish and Wildlife laws back in February, and there it says that Dwarf hamsters Phodopus are exotic and require a permit. Mesocricetus is exempt. No mention is made of Cricetus. My temporary permit for Fuzz issued by the pet store said "Chinese Dwarf Hamster."

Speaking of legality. . . . Chinese hamsters are considered exotic wildlife in NJ and so one is supposed to have a permit to keep them. I fully intended to apply for a permit for Fuzz, but after two phone requests yielded no application for a permit in the mail, I gave up. The pet store said that very few people actually apply for the permit. However, NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife gets a document from the pet store for every Chinese hamster they sell. . . . guess they've never noticed that they don't issue that same number of permits??
Shhhhhhhhhhh--don't tell anyone that I'm harboring an illegal immigrant! ;D

So sad and so infuriating--all that damage and loss of life for a few reptiles. . . . RIP all the animals who died so innocently in this tragedy.

Wow. That film makes an impact. That image of the 55 gallon drums filled with pet bodies is one I may very well have nightmares about. But nevertheless, thanks, Andrea. I have gone to petfinder.com a couple of times. I bawl every time.

No, not slow--you're just thinking and asking good questions! ;D (Can you tell that I'm not one of those nasty professors that calls students stupid if they ask any question at all?? )

(1) We tend to think of tameness as a learned behavior rather than an innate characteristic. The article is saying that tameness seems to be rooted in genetics. Tame animals can be produced through selective breeding--no socialization necessary. Foxes were produced that had the characteristics of pet dogs.
(2) Without the experiments involving many generations of animals, the genetic link can't be demonstrated.
(3) Yes.
Thanks for reading, Katie!

Hmmm. . . . it would probably cost a lot for a replica. How are you at fundraising, DF?
