I'm down to 16 gerbils. One day I hope to keep 4 or 6 max. I think that is a good number. But for now I'm enjoying all my little critters. DF, how many critters do you have all together in your place? My friend and I always seem to have about the same, both of us have 4 bunnies, 5 degus and 'a' hamster and 'a' dog. I think she has 20 gerbils or so, and i'm down to 16, oh and she has rats and I don't.

This isn't premature, three is a VERY good age for a gerbil, specially one who's ill. I wouldn't expect a critter with cancer to make their second birthday nevermind their third, you've done an excellent job with him.

Oh yikes, poor little critter. How old is he? I use critical care for my rabbits when they have tummy problems, it's great stuff. What else are you feeding him? Some people make a slurrey of mushed up seeds, apple sause and such for gerbils who have lost a tooth or have other problems eating. Could the little guy have cancer? I could see that a reason for why his hair would fall out too, specially if the tumor is cancerous and it's spread. It may just be this guys time to go Sounds like you've done everything to help him have a full, happy and comfortable life.

Aww, they are cute. How did you get Solara's name? I have a theme.... All my gerbils are named after vehicles and vehicle brands. So Malibu after a Chevy Malibu (As i really liek teh classic ones) and Solara is a Toyota My Clan is called the "Gerbil Shop"... like an Automotive shop

I did a bit of picture taking or Malibu & Solara last week, and thought I'd post a few pictures. They sure have grown up into beautiful girls. Solara... Malibu... This is Malibu the first day I brought her home... And this is Solara when I first got her... They sure have grown up!

Congratulations on the new addition, she's adorable! Animals do amazingly well with disabilities. I had a gerbil with 'lock paw' and there wasn't anything she couldn't do. I had onother with only 3 legs, she was one of my fastest gerbils. It's sad that most people don't want special needs animals, and they pet stores 'dispose' of them

I feel the same way somedays. Then others i'm just so glad to have everyone. If they are trully becoming overwhelming and their lives are not as good as they could be you could try looking for homes for a few pairs. I wouldn't drop them off at a shelter, but maybe see if U can hold onto them as a 'foster' and have the help of a animal rescue group with re-homing. The group I volunteer for we do this, we will post peoples pets on Petfinder.com and the families hold onto the animals untill a home can be found. Don't rely on your son to remember to help you with tank cleaning. Kids are still just kids, and I don't belive any child should have a pet, but any animal in a families home is the parents responcibility. How many Tanks do you have? When i clean tanks (usualy wed. nights) i will use a white board pen and write the date on the glass, so that I know when it was cleaned. This helps me remember who needs cleaning when, b/c sometimes I can't get all the tanks cleaned at the same time. Be happy you have just the gerbils, I have to clean the hamster every week (I scoop out her 'toilet area every couple days) because she STINKS , and same with the Degu's they need to be done more often, and the boys spray all over everything, a total mess. Usually my bunnies are pretty good, all but one. And I clean out there litter pans every couple days, then their whole area once a week. Man, i'm so glad I don't have kids yet, I definetly wouldn't have the time. <hugs> It will all work out, you may just need to make a schedule to keep you on top of everything.

I can just picture them all in one wheel, alot of my gerbils try the same thing LOL... too funny.
Do you have a Dollar store close by? I buy my rodent dishes from the dollar store, i buy tealight candle holders made of glass or ceramic, sometimes two for a dollar. They work GREAT and save so much money in the end. You don't 'have' to have dishes with gerbils, allot of people just sprinkle the food on the ground. I personally don't, i like to keep track and feed by whats in the bowl then overfeed/underfeed but that's just me.
