Do you have a picture of it? I think I understand, but visuals are handy! I'm putting Darko in there, and he has only chewed on his cage when he was unhappy. Usually the toilet paper rolls, wood chews, and cardboard keep him occupied!
>>I assume NP is OK?? She said he was recently.<< Unfortunately, Megs doesn't have hamsters anymore. Hers all passed on, so she gave me her old equipment. She's now got a Budgie and is waiting for her Doberman puppy, so she will have her hands full soon.

>>knock over a wheel in a bin, stand on it, gnaw a hole in the plastic top while standing on tip toe, do a remarkable chinup, and squeeze up and out<<
Sounds like my best friend's hamster... That thing is a Houdini (and really big for a hamster). He's managed to escape from every single cage he's been in.
On another note, the nameless one still is in hiding and insanely shy. He still hides when I put food in, but last night he stayed out and ran in his wheel instead of running away. So I guess that's a step in the right direction. Oh the joys of being patient...

Hey, Megs gave me her old habitats, and it looks like NP chewed a hole in the bottom of it. I figured I would post a few pictures and see if any of you brilliant people could tell me how to fix it! Inside Outside Another angle outside Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Lester is adorable! I've never known anyone with a GP that colour before. Sam's cute too, but I've always liked the long haired ones myself. Poppy looks like my best friend's old bunny Chippy. Only Poppy is cuter and probably less evil.
I don't understand why my parent's wont let me get a bunny or a GP... I'm only allowed hamsters.

Ha ha! I had a hamster named Oreo... He was evil...
I was thinking of Marshmallow (only that name is bigger than he is) or Vanilla, but I think it was because I was hungry. He's not fat enough to be a marshmallow...
And I usually name my hamsters the opposite of their colouring (except that Vanilla is naturally dark...)
I'm going to test the names on him... see what one fits...

Ha ha, I saw the picture, but what is it? Is it a wild animal, or are they pets? Or both? Is it one of those weird hybrid creatures? And I think it looks kind of like a beaver... only a lot different... but similar in a way.

Ha ha, the only time I have touched him and had to pick him up was when I was putting him from the cage at the pet store into the cardboard transport box, and then from the box into his cage when he got home. (for the second one he was so scared from being in the transport box that I took the cage in half and let him crawl out) Whenever I open the cage to change his water or feed he runs and hides. That's the only time I go in his cage. I was thinking of moving him to my room so the rest of the family will leave him alone too. (and my room smells like me as well) I've always been told that you were supposed to let them do their thing for the first 3 days, but then after that you can leave your hand in the cage with treats until they come over to you. That's what I did with Darko and it worked. Then again, he has a completely different personality than this one.

Well, I figured the boys deserved their own introductions. (They are both syrians) This is Darko. (Yes, named after Donnie Darko) He's my sweet darling. I got him awhile ago after my other hamster died suddenly. He had been brought back to the store with complaints of him being mean and biting. Well, in the many months that I've had him, he's only bitten once. (That was after an unruly child poked him and screamed at the top of his lungs; I'd bite the kid too) If you treat him right, he will love you forever. He is in love with his wheel, and if I put him in a cage without it he will get cranky. He eats and sleeps beside it, too! This is my new hamster. He doesn't have a name yet. He's quite timid, and is not used to me yet. I've only had him for a few days, so I'm not too worried. You can't see in this picture, but he has a white stripe down his chin and white feet. He hides during the day but I did manage to catch a picture of him. (this was after my pathetic attempt to rig a clean water bottle to the wall while the other one was getting washed) So there are my boys. I will post more pictures as they come. All name suggestions for the little one will be considered and greatly appreciated!

So I must post the question: Where is an ideal location for hamster taming? I have a dog and a house that isn't finished, so I haven't had my hamsters out much. One of them is tame and I let him roll around the ball on my bedroom floor with the door closed when I'm in there. (I let him run until he stops or seems stressed) My room isn't safe for him to be without the ball, because he could get into places he shouldn't be. My new hamster is scared of almost everything it seems, and he rarely lets me touch his back, much less pick him up. (then again, I've only had him for a few days) I plan on letting him run around in the other ball, but is there somewhere I could have them out without risking them falling or getting stuck somewhere? I had heard that some people take them out in their bathtubs with the plug in, but is that safe? Would it work? I need some suggestions.
EDIT: I checked the calendar, he's been here for 4 days.

What is it with people that find the death of rodents funny? Or when they say "it was only a [insert fav rodent here] and you can get another one".

Oh no... not the Beatles! (My boyfriend is slightly obsessed and as much as I enjoy and respect their music and what they've done, I just don't get it) Besides... what does that have to do with voles?
What is a vole exactly? Other than that adorably funny looking animal in the picture... Which is cute in it's own weird way.

For hamsters and other small rodents you can get a Transport Unit (Habitrail OVO product). I had one but sold it to my friend. I don't take my hamster's out of the house, and if I had to take them to the vet, I would put them in the little cage. Some people keep the boxes that the pet store gives you when you buy them.
I think that the main reason most animals freak out in their carriers is because they are moving. I had dogs that loved being in their carrier, but when it started to move it was a whole different ballgame. That being said, I've had dogs that wouldn't go near the carrier and freaked out when they did, so I guess to each it's own.
