The vets over here still have to get there x-ray machine and stuff like that from the same place the big hospitals do, and those machine are very expensive. So I can understand why they need to make the price of a surgery that high, but on the other hand; If you don't have to pay much you would come back sooner, if needed. And people with small pets will go too. The vet that operated Paxie was the cheapest one i've been to in all the years I have pets.
The Biggest costs me and my mom had was when Nikita(our jack russel) was operated on a Few Tumors in her mammary glands(Since a few months there are new ones, but we decided to not let her have another surgery, the surgery is more dangerous to her than the tumors) it was about 600 or 700 euro

It's a bit strange, but on the other side I can understand why she doesn't know rats. She mostly has to do big cattle like Cows,Sheep, pigs&Horses and the bigger pets like dogs&Cats. I'm living in the part of the Netherlands where it seems to be a luxery to go to the vet with your small pets.

I called the vet. because I was curious if Ratpax could already play for short times with his brother, because he is so lonely right now. at first she was very quiet, and needed time to think I guess, after that she asked: Isn't he sitting alone!?..Well, yeah at the moment he is but normally he has 3 'roomies'...
She asked if I was sure that was going alright!?Didn't they fight etc. Offcourse they do, but that's normal, and it's not really fitghting. Then she gave me a big *What the hell*-shock and said: I think you should decide if you place them Together, I would never place 2 males together they could kill each other..
Okay..I didn't expect that kind of a reaction. It was already clear to me she didn't know allot about rats, but that she didn't know rats need companion is a real shock.
So I asked a couple of rat-friends and they said Noa&Ratpax could play together, but I should keep an eye on it...

If I compare it to people on the Dutch Rat forum It seems to me my vet is very cheap...Some of them pay at least 3 times what I payed..The Surgery alone was just €58,94..The rest of the money was Weekend Consult(€26) and the painkiller she gave him(€16) I had an argument with one of my best friends, she said I was crazy for letting a rat who's almost 2 years be operated...I Was very angry, So I told her: If you're dog was about 7 years, You would still let him have surgery if he needed one, even if it's not likely he would get older than 8 years!?..She said: I think you can't compare a dog with a rat! Off course you can! A rat is also a living, breathing animal, And If this surgery could mean that I could have Ratpax for just another couple of months, Maybe even a year, why wouldn't I help him? I'll post the pictures of the wound later, I'm now going to make lunch for my baby-brother!

I'm so happy!!! My precious is back home and he's doing very well! the Vet. did a last check up right before the surgery, and he found another lump...And I already knew he had 2 because I discovered one right above the big open tumor. But these other ones where really small. Now paxie is bald on his side and on his back he's looking very funny. Paxie was very happy to see me, he kept on licking my fingers and trying to give kisses The Vet. made a mistake on the costs, It was just over €100...That's about...146 US dollars I have some pictures of the wound before he went to see the vet, I don't know I you'll want to see it...It's not for people who can't stand blood and open wounds because it's pretty bad to see it. I'll post them later...And I'll make some pictures of how it looks at the moment. I'll keep you posted on how he's doing!

After just discovering that Akira died I had another Shock: My big male, Ratpax, Has a tumor behind his front paw And not just any tumor, no, It's an open one! He apparently scratched it open, and there was allot of blood coming out of the wound. So I went to the vet. with my step mom, The vet gave him a painkiller. Ratpax's surgery is scheduled for Monday morning, and If everything goes according to plans I can pick him up in the afternoon. So I'm a bit nervous, hoping he will come out of it okay. It's going to cost me about €110 Incl. the consult I got tonight so It isn't even that expensive

I like the fact allot of people think different about rats after seeing Ratatouille, but this is just another 101 dalmations/nemo/harry potter action: people seeing a movie, thinking: WOW! I need to have a dog/Fish/Owl or whatever. And petstores are gladly to sell this animals. The rats will be placed in to small cages, on there own and without things to stimulate there curiousity....Allot of them should be glad to end up in a good animalshelter. Earlier today I had an argument with a friend of my sister, they bought a rat as a birthday gift for there schoolteacher....the rat was alone, in a cardboard box en they came to me for food..I asked them if I could have him, because I told them it wasn't fair to do this to an animal. But they said no, And they're getting a rat for Sinterklaas(And no, that's not Santa ) So I told them they should get at least 2 rats, but they wouldn't listen :S.... I hate it when people don't know, or want to know anything about there pet. (Sorry for my bad writing, I'm a bit tired...it's late on the other side of the world )

My boys love the bag-games, sometimes I fill them with paper-pieces and rat-candy so they have to search for the candy I think Locutus is adorable, it looks like he's begging for attention

I think he was still mad at the other one, and that's why he squeeked. One of my guys, Ratpax, is really dominant and when they had a little fight he'll run around the cage squeeking with his hair wide and an arched back. Also: Amice will do the same and sometimes react that way towards me when I touch him after a fight, and he'll groom his tail and the rest of his body after a fight. I think it's a natural reaction, making sure everything is alright. I think the noise they make is to let the other ones know he's still very, very angry!

Oh yeah, they love it over here! Ratpax&Aedie love pea fishing... Laviv is just like an elephant when he's in the water: He'll be snorkeling with only his nose above the water The only one that's a bit afraid in the water is Amice, I don't push them to go in the water. If he doesn't want to, he can stay on dry land

Some of them don't like it, and the first time they hit the water they'll try to get out as quickly as possible but after that....

Over here they love the frozen peas, I always buy Frozen peas for them when it's really warm. I put them in a bowl and then they can try to get them out of the water I can't put a fan in front of the cage, because 1 of the boys is very afraid of the sound it makes. And (my) rats are very sensitive for cold/dry air. But I always put some wet towels and cold marble stone-pieces in there cage. I'm very happy to tell you Asher is doing allot better at the moment, He's going to take a shower in a few minutes He loves swimming in the sink. Yesterday Asher&Noa where spoiled by my sisters, We had a barbecue at my dad's with Family&friends Asher en Noa where with me the whole time, and 2 of my sisters ,Angelique&Alexandra, are soooo in love with Noa they had to feed him chicken and fish and Asher was on the edge of my plate stealing pieces when he could . By the way, before you give a rat ice cubes, you need to make them wet because they can get stuck with there paws and mouth on the ice. I don't know if you already knew that, but just in case

I don't know if you all know about the heat over here in the Netherlands, but I can tell you It's not the normal weather you can expect in Holland. No rain, only that damn hot sun Well, Asher can't stand that warmth. His tail feels like it's on fire, and his breathing is going real fast. I just had him in the sink to let him cool off. I'm taking him and Noa with me to my dad because I have to be there for the weekend. I hope he's going to survive this weather, Asher is 1,5 years old and he's starting to look old already. I hope I can send a message later saying everything is alright with my baby, because I would be devastated when he dies
