Tyza has lost his fight with DSD, He died this afternoon.
He did perk up abit and started eating under his own power but obviously it was his last attempt of fighting.
We here at home have all been saddened by Tyza's death as we all loved him so much. I suppose he's finally able to meet his Granddad Hozza.
I still have his sister Snuffles who has shown no signs of the DSD. I will breed from here in a week or so as she is a descended of the Army founder Snuffy.

I have lost the fight for Storm. He died about half an hour ago.
This is quite a shock really, Storm was running around normal last night, doing the monkey bars etc..
It's a shame, he recovered from his big operation only to be succumb to a bug.
Life's a bitch at times, I bet he's having fun up there now..
RIP Stormus..

As you know my a few om my hamsters are suffering from DSD (Degenerative Spinal Disorder) Blood tests have confirmed this now so well done Lesley for spotting the symptoms. (it's a shame you knew them from your own experiences though) Well I have lost Yuna to this awful disease and now I am fighting a life battle for the rest. SO heres the update.. Thunder: I'm really pleased about him. He is no longer wobbly, he's eating solid food again. I think we caught him before the DSD took hold of him.Hopefully touch wood, he will come out of this ordeal unscathed. Storm: He like Thunder has gotten over it. He is climbing around again and doing normal Storm stuff. Venus: We almost lost her Friday. she was curled up in a tiny ball and I believe was on here deathbed. Well I carried her around the whole day in one of my socks (yup I said socks) and she started to come back from the dead. She is now doing very well. She is still pretty wobbly and unsteady on her feet, but she is eating by her self now. I have high hopes for her surviving this dreaded illness. Lilo: Lilo is still very wobbly, she is on daily injections (as is Venus) to help boost her immune system and to fight this bug. Lilo has however used her brain abit. She will lean against the side of her cage to eat as she falls down when shes tried to eat normally. Shes also got a little nippy, but I wouldn't be in the best of moods if I was Ill. Tyza: ...This is sad. I really don't hold much hope for him. I am feeding him every four hours on baby food by hand, which he is taking. I think however he has suffered a stroke too. He one side is very weak (though he can move it) and his little head tilts to one side. I really hate seeing him like that, so I'm giving him another 24 hours and if there no improvement I think I will have to think weather it's fair to him to carry on living like he is. I might have to face up to euthanasia. Lightning: Lightning I thought had this DSD as his little face was quite swollen. It turned out on a close inspection from my boss (who is the head vet at the practise I'm training at) that he has nothing more than conjunctivitis caused by a tiny piece of wood shaving getting in his eye! I laugh at this but shoudn't. He is on a course of eye drops which will get rid of the infection. I laugh at this because it's something so simple and treatable unlike DSD. As for the rest of my army, there living with my older brother Ade for a while. They are all OK as I go and see them everyday. there all still cheeky and are being spoilt by my brother So I will keep you posted on there conditions over the next few days. Kane

James, The main symptoms are wobbling..they around like they have had a few to many beers. Other symptoms are very sticky eyes, slightly swollen head and very red ears. There some comfort that there not in actually pain. They do eat soft food and drink. It's just a shame to see them go through this. However, it's not all sad, there is 1 in 10 chance they will make a full recovery. Yuna however missed her chance Kane

It's called Degenerative Spinal Disorder (DSD) It is usually a weekend gene in the gene pool with starts them off. It can be caught though if a hamster eats something another hamsters has had (it's usually pooh that is the spreader)
The worst is all rodents can get it..

Once again I am a bringer of bad news..
Tyza, Lilo, Venus have a brain virus, they have all been wobbly so I took them into work this morning. It affects all rodents and can be contagious. The virus attacks the part of the brain that controls the nerves and muscles. I lot Yuna a few hours ago to the dreaded virus. Thunder is also suffering from it, the silver lining is that Thunder and Storm are in the very early stage and can be treated.
All the healthy members of the Army including the Rats and Gerbils have been shipped off to my older brothers Ade, There they will have less chance of catching it. I have had the others checked over and so far there is no sign of the illness.
I will be giving up keeping hamsters after I loose the rest of the army. It's heartbreaking to watch the poor mights go through this.
The illness is still very new to hamsters, it's caused by the fact that hamsters are bread so much now that there gene pools are unstable. Another example of this sort of thing is with the tropical fish Neon Tetras.
So where do I go from here? I really do not know. The Kane you all used to know is fading away...

I would like you all to welcome 2 new recruits at the army! I had a a call today from our not so local rescue centre telling me that had to youngish hamsters in from an abandoned house. Well me being a soft old git I took them in. First up is Eowyn Eowyn She's the biter of the two, shes tried to eat me but I am to quick for her! Still she will tame down in no time. Now Arwen gave me a warm feeling on the inside Arwen..She reminds me of Shiva (You all remember her right?) Arwen is very tame but a little quiet. She will soon settle in though. So those are my two new babies Kane

The water supplyer added more chlorine to the water without informing us. I found this out after 3/4 of an hour on the phone. I wasn't best pleased Kane

It's totally normal for a hamster to do this. As Tom mentions it's to aide with cracking hard nut shells.

I hate doing this I really do, I have just got home from work to find the army leader Kiwi lying in his cage, he has had a major stroke. He died about 5 minutes ago in my hand.
Kiwi was Moppy and Hozza's son and would be 2 years old in November.
This has really saddened me as I know it's a nasty thing to say, Kiwi was my favorite. He has made me laugh so many times with his insane antics. I have his Son and Daughter Tyza and Snuffles, but still my little Kiwi has left me
I feel so empty now as Kiwi's little character was bigger than me (and thats big!)
I'm not sure who will lead the army to war, or if the army will continue.
....I'm heartbroken

Storm is back to 100% fitness. he has fully recovered from his operation to untwist his intestines. He has also recovered from his hair loss which was caused by a virus of all things (Not skin cancer as we fist though...phew) Bright eyed and a coat full of fur, Storm is one healthy boy again! He is still a little scruffy in places, but thats to be expected. I have spent a small fortune getting Storm back to full health, but to me every penny was worth it. Kane
